[Contributionsby Owen Pietrokowsky, Gregory Khitrov and June Lau] Technical Talks Chong H. Ahn (Microsystems and BioMEMS Lab, University of Cincinnati) gave a talk on "Disposable Smart Plastic Biochips for Clinical Diagnostics" as part of Symposium U. His chips are plastic-based "smart biochips" that use innovative sPROMS (Structurally Programmable Microfluidic Systems) technology. These chips offer fast and reliable measurements of human metabolic parameters with minimum bodily invasion. One of the key elements of the presentation was the low-cost and smart nature of his devices. Other issues discussed were: disposability, low power consumption, on-chip power using pressurized air, and factors for materials selection. The principal biochip material is COC (Cyclic Olefin Copolymers). In addition, the speaker emphasized that sampling and sensing occurs in 20 seconds.
